Looking for a Halloween cupcakes that are straight out of a horror movie?
These Halloween Horror Cupcakes are creepy, dramatic and super easy to make. I’m a huge fan of horror movies (even though I spend half the movie peeking through my fingers) I do love the drama, the suspense, the cinematic artistry of it all.
These cupcakes channel the same energy with a nod to some of the classics like The Shining and Friday the 13th, complete with axes and plenty of “blood”. With candy melt skulls, edible icing weapons, and a realistic raspberry “blood” drizzle, they’re the perfect centerpiece for your Halloween dessert table.

Halloween Horror Cupcakes: Step-by-Step Instructions

Before you begin: Make sure your cupcakes are baked and completely cooled, and your buttercream is prepared and ready to pipe. For quick and easy American Buttercream, use a 1:1 ratio of butter to powdered sugar, plus whatever flavoring you want (vanilla, lemon, etc.)
Make the Candy Melt Skulls
- Melt the white candy melts according to the package directions.
- Transfer the melted candy to a piping bag or small zip-top bag with the corner snipped off for easier filling.
- Pipe into your skull silicone mold. Tap the mold to release any air bubbles.
- Freeze for about 5 minutes, or until firm.

Make the Raspberry “Blood”
While the candy melt skulls are setting in the freezer, make your raspberry “blood.”
For a chunky “brains” or gore effect:
- Add 1/2 cup of frozen raspberries and 1 tbsp of sugar to a microwave-safe bowl.
- Heat for 1:20 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds, until the raspberries break down.
- The result should be a jam-like texture, perfect for adding some gory detail around the skull.
💀 Tip: Set aside some of the chunky mixture to spoon around your skulls before straining. Use the rest to make the smooth drizzle below.

For a smooth drizzle:
- Strain the raspberry mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a microwave-safe bowl to remove seeds and chunks.
- Add a splash of water to rinse the remaining liquid through the sieve (this water becomes part of your drizzle mixture).
- Add 1/2 tsp honey and 1/2 tsp cornstarch.
- Microwave again until thickened (about 30 seconds), then cool completely.
- Transfer to a small piping bag for easy drizzling.
Attach the Icing Decorations and add Gore
Remove the candy skulls from the mold and set aside.
- Heat the edge of a butter knife (I use a kitchen torch, but you can also dip it in hot water).
- Gently press the heated knife into the top of one candy skull to create a small indent.
- Immediately press the icing decoration axe or cleaver into the softened spot before it hardens.
- Repeat with remaining skulls, working one at a time.
- Let all the skulls sit for a few seconds until the candy hardens again and the icing decorations are secure.
- Once set, spoon some of the cooled chunky raspberry mixture around the base and over each skull for a gory “brains” effect. (this part can be done after adding skulls to the cupcakes as well).

💀 Tip: This knife trick works for attaching any small edible decorations to candy melts!
Frost & Assemble
- Pipe a swirl of buttercream onto each cooled cupcake using a 1M tip (or your favorite large piping tip).
- Using a piping bag with just the tip cut off, drizzle the smooth raspberry “blood” over the frosting.
- Place your decorated candy skull on top.
- Add one final drizzle of smooth raspberry sauce over everything to tie it all together.

Troubleshooting
If icing decorations fall off or break:
- Use a small amount of melted candy melts as “glue” to reattach pieces or adhere to the skull
- Lean the decoration against something while the candy hardens
- Once set, add raspberry gore over the area to conceal the candy melt
💀 Tip: Add red food coloring (oil-based or gel) to your candy melts so they blend in better and are easier to hide under the raspberry blood!
Conclusion
These Halloween Horror Cupcakes look like they came straight out of a horror movie, but they’re actually super simple to make. Between the creamy buttercream, candy melt skulls, and that realistic raspberry “blood,” they’re a killer addition to any Halloween dessert table.
