Heart-shaped cupcake bouquets are one of those designs that look more complicated than they actually are. Once you understand the structure, the shape comes together pretty easily and it’s a great option for Valentine’s Day or anytime you want something a little different.

How to Build the Heart-Shaped Cupcake Bouquet
Step 1
Start with the center cup. Position a second cup slightly underneath the rim of the first and staple them together securely at two points near the rim and at the base.

Step 2
Continue forming a circle. Attach cups around the center cup, following the same method from Step 1.

Step 3
Continue this pattern, working in a circular shape until you have five cups arranged around the center cup, with a gap at the top.

Tip: Ensure stability: The cups should form a dome shape and stand upright without wobbling. If they feel loose, add more staples to secure the structure
Step 4
Begin shaping the heart. Place a new cup between two existing outer cups, following the one rim up and one rim down. Staple in place. Repeat on the other side to create the rounded top sections of the heart.

Step 5
Finish off the heart shape. Add a cup in the middle of the cup you added in the last step, and the top most cup connected to the center cup. Do this on both sides, again following the one rim up and one rim down.

In the last two steps, ensure that each cup rim sits one above and one below the neighboring cups. This helps create a secure structure and maintains the rounded shape. Refer to step 2.
The bottoms of the cups should follow a smooth curve.

Arranging Your Cupcakes
Once your cup structure is ready, it’s time for the best part, arranging your floral cupcakes!
For a fuller look, wrap each cupcake in tissue paper. Stack two sheets (5x5in) slightly offset, place the cupcake in the center, and wrap gently.
- Place support cupcakes first. Start with the top two cups and the bottom point of the heart, these anchor the bouquet and prevent tipping.
- Fill in the remaining cups. Work inward, distributing colors evenly if using multiple designs. Use toothpicks to anchor cupcakes in place and prevent shifting.
- Adjust tissue paper as needed to cover any gaps between cups.
Tip: Use a toothpick or brush handle to adjust cupcakes in place.

Wrapping Your Heart-Shaped Cupcake Bouquet
- Lay out 2 sheets of cellophane, slightly staggered. (I used roughly 14-16 inch squares)
- Position the bouquet in the center and secure cups with double sided tape.
- For the top V or middle section, tuck in the cellophane and secure with tape.
- Lift one corner of the cellophane, fold in on itself slightly and secure with tape.
- Repeat with the remaining corners, ensuring a snug fit.

Tips for Success
- Secure your structure: Make sure each cup is firmly stapled (or glued or taped) so the bouquet stays stable and isn’t wobbly. Double-check any loose cups and add more staples if necessary before adding cupcakes.
- Place support cupcakes first when putting together your arrangement. Add a cupcake to each corner of the heart-shape to increase stability.
- Secure top V or middle section of cellophane first: Before shaping any cellophane around the bouquet structure, gently push the cellophane into the top V-shape and tape in place.
You can make this a 12 cupcake bouquet by adding additional cups between the top 2 side cups (as arrows show below).

Final Thoughts
Heart-shaped cupcake bouquets make stunning centerpieces and thoughtful gifts. Once you’ve built one structure, the technique becomes second nature – and you can adapt it for different occasions by changing your color palette and flower types.
